You might find it on the shelf of a neighbourhood wine shop, have it recommended by the person who runs a specialist store, or order it from the winery that made it.

The wine is the same. What changes is everything around it: the journey the bottle has made, the information you receive, the wines within your reach and your relationship with whoever sells it to you. Buying wine directly from a winery is neither better nor worse than buying it in a shop. They are different ways of approaching wine, and knowing what each one offers helps you choose according to the moment and what you are looking for.

What buying wine directly from a winery means

Buying wine directly from a winery, or buying from the producer, means purchasing the bottles without intermediaries: at the winery itself, at the end of a visit, or through its online shop. Direct sales create a relationship with no one in between the people who make the wine and the people who will drink it. The bottle is no longer just a reference on a shelf and can come with something more: the place where it was born, the vineyard it comes from or the way it was made.

It is worth separating two questions that are often confused. One is the channel, that is, who you buy from. The other is the format, whether you buy in person or from a screen. A specialist shop can also sell online, and a winery can sell to you at its own counter. The practical side of buying wine online deserves its own attention; here the question is a different one: what changes when the bottle comes directly from the winery that makes it?

What a good wine shop offers

A specialist shop has a virtue that is hard to match: breadth. Wines from different regions, varieties and styles sit side by side in the same space, which makes it possible to compare, discover and put together a different selection for each occasion.

Behind good shops there is also judgement. Those who run them know the wines they select and often know their customers too. Their advice can point you towards an area you did not know, a different variety or a wine that fits what you are looking for at that moment. That broad perspective, which connects different wineries and regions, is precisely part of the value of a specialist shop.

If you want to bring together bottles from several origins for a meal, explore different styles or be guided without having made a choice beforehand, a shop can be a good place to start.

Traceability, storage and information: what the winery offers

Buying wine directly from the winery offers a different experience. The difference lies above all in the closeness to the wine’s origin and in the information that comes with it.

A bottle can pass through several channels before reaching the person who finally opens it. Distributors, warehouses, transport and points of sale are all part of the chain that allows a wine to reach places far from where it was made. When you buy directly from the producer, part of that journey disappears and the relationship with the winery becomes more direct.

This has to do with storage. Wine is sensitive to temperature, light and sudden changes, and a bottle that has spent weeks in an unsuitable place can arrive tired even if the label is impeccable. At home, the responsibility becomes yours, and knowing how to keep wine at home during the warm months completes the care the winery has taken until then.

The second difference is information. The people who work the vineyard can tell you which plot a wine comes from, how the vintage behaved or when it makes most sense to open each bottle. These are nuances that rarely fit on a label and that help you decide, for example, whether a wine is ready to drink now or better kept.

The selection available can also change. At the winery you find all its wines together and understand how they relate to one another. In some cases, limited-production wines or wines not found at every point of sale may also be available. This depends on each winery and on each moment.

And the price? There is no fixed rule: it depends on the policy of each winery and each shop, so it is best not to choose a channel for that reason alone.

When the winery is small, the difference is greater

In low-production wineries, the distance between the person who sells and the person who makes the wine is minimal. The Priorat, one of only two Qualified Designations of Origin (DOCa) in Spain alongside Rioja, is home to many projects of this size, with vineyards on steep slopes and low yields.

Celler Mas Doix follows this model. It is a family winery founded in 1998 by Valentí and Ramon Llagostera in Poboleda, on vineyards that have been cultivated since 1902 on llicorella soils. It works five plots with their own names, Belissario, Coma de Cases, La Vicaria, Les Foreses and Mas de l’Ossó, and has practised organic viticulture since 2016. When a winery works this way, every wine has a plot and specific decisions behind it, and buying it directly is the simplest way to get to know them.

Buying direct also goes well with a visit. Seeing the slope and the soil a wine comes from changes the way you understand it, which is why it makes sense to visit the Priorat from the vineyard before deciding which bottles to take home. The winery offers five wine tourism experiences, priced between 40 and 130 euros per person, and has its own online shop for those who prefer to receive the wines at home after tasting them where they were made.

How to choose between a shop and a winery depending on what you want

The useful question is not which one is better, but what you need for each purchase.

If you are looking for variety, want to compare regions or need bottles for an occasion with different tastes, a specialist shop can offer many possibilities in one place. If you already know a winery and want to follow it, try other wines in its range or better understand what you drink, buying direct makes more sense.

Timing matters too. If you need a bottle today for dinner, the shop around the corner will do. If you are thinking of keeping wine, following the evolution of the same wine over several vintages or giving something whose origin you can explain, the winery offers you a context that arrives more diluted through other channels.

And then there is the relationship you want to build. Some people find a trusted shop to be their usual adviser, and others prefer to get to know a few wineries in depth and buy from them directly, vintage after vintage. These paths are not mutually exclusive. Many people combine both, discovering wines in shops and buying them directly from the winery when they want to return to them or learn more about their origin.

Buying from the producer: wine with its context

When the wine you are interested in comes from a particular winery, buying it directly lets you get closer to everything behind the bottle: the vineyard, the vintage, the land and the way its makers understand wine.

In the Mas Doix shop you will find its eight wines together in one place, from Les Crestes, fresh and fruity, to those born from a single plot, such as 1903 Coma de Cases.

Buying directly from a winery lets you know the origin of each wine and access the information provided by the people who make it. Discover and buy the wines of Mas Doix directly from Poboleda.

The same bottle can reach your table by different routes.
